Social Diversity

ASSIGNMENT FOR SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2021 AT 5:30 PM

Make a meal or some kind of food to experience how people in a different culture than your own experience food.  Here are some recipes that you may choose from, although it doesn't have to be from these.  The food however should be from a different culture than your own, and something that would not normally be eaten.

Choose a recipe from HERE

  • Why did you choose the recipe that you made?
  • What ingredients were different than what you are accustomed to?
  • Did you like the food?
Be sure and take photos of your dish and post them on the landing page of Faith Formation Youth (see the button at the top right corner) or email them to: faithform@staugustinesparish.org.

REVIEW

Students in grades 6-10 began a 2 part Faith Formation Session on Social Diversity last Saturday, February 6th.

The first thing we looked at were optical illusions!  Look at the optical illusions on the slides below:

Why is it that most of us did not think of going outside the boundaries to solve the problem?

To solve the problem, we had to get outside of our usual way of thinking— outside of the box we put ourselves in. We had to literally draw outside the lines. This is what is required of us when we interact with people who are different from us. We have to look at other ways of “thinking about thinking.”

Drawing outside the lines is very difficult because we are so used to our own way of thinking and our own point of view that it is hard to see other points of view. To successfully interact with people from different backgrounds and different cultures, we must learn to look at the world from many points of view.

Jesus was very good at seeing things differently!

The Healing of Two Blind Men

As they left Jericho, a great crowd followed him.

Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out,

“[Lord,] Son of David, have pity on us!”

The crowd warned them to be silent, but they called out all the more, “Lord, Son of David, have pity on us!”

Jesus stopped and called them and said, “What do you want me to do for you?”

They answered him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.”

Moved with pity, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight, and followed him.
